Controlled English for DL-Lite

چکیده

As it is well-known, querying and managing structured data in natural language is a challenging task due to its ambiguity (syntactic and semantic) and its expressiveness. On the other hand, querying, for example, a database is a well-defined and unambigous task, namely, that of evaluating some formal query (e.g. an SQL query) of a limited expressiveness over some finite structure: the instance of the database schema. However these formal query languages may be utterly obscure for the casual user. To bridge this gap, the use of controlled languages has been proposed. Controlled languages are fragments of, say, English, with a limited vocabulary and a very restricted set of grammar rules, but in which ambiguity is minimal if not alltogether unexistent. Moreover, they can be engineered in a way that a meaning representation built out from some logic can be compositionally constructed during parsing. A logic ideally matching the expressive powerof a formal query language being able to be taken as such. As a first step to building such a language we study the crucial issue of the expressive power of the logic to which it should translate in the back end: DL-Lite, that we believe well-adapted for querying and specifying data. To this end, we inspect a certain number of tractable fragments of English that compostionally translate into fragments of first order logic (FOL), tractable in that the satisfiability problem (SAT) for these induced fragments of FOL is in P, and compare them to DL-Lite w.r.t. expressive power.

Expressing DL-Lite Ontologies with Controlled English

We are interested in providing natural language front-ends to databases upon which an ontology layer has been added. Specifically, here we deal with how to express ontologies formalized in Description Logics in a controlled language, i.e., a fragment of natural language tailored to compositionally translate into a knowledge representation (KR) language. As KR language we have chosen DL-LiteR,⊓,...

Exploring Controlled English Ontology-Based Data Access

Controlled languages (CLs) are subsets of natural language with minimal ambiguity (lexical, structural, or semantic) tailored to fullfil data management tasks. Recently [5, 11], they have been proposed as a means of providing natural language interfaces to databases (DBs) and to ontology-based data access systems (OBDASs) centered around the W3C standard ontology language OWL1 (Web Ontology Lan...

Adding DL-Lite TBoxes to Proper Knowledge Bases

Levesque’s proper knowledge bases (proper KBs) correspond to infinite sets of ground positive and negative facts, with the notable property that for FOL formulas in a certain normal form, which includes conjunctive queries and positive queries possibly extended with a controlled form of negation, entailment reduces to formula evaluation. However proper KBs represent extensional knowledge only. ...

FreeStyle Lite--a blood glucose meter that requires no coding.

BACKGROUND Abbott Diabetes Care introduced the FreeStyle Lite blood glucose monitoring system, which simplifies the management of diabetes. The FreeStyle Lite system relies on FreeStyle technology but eliminates the need for coding the meter for individual strip lots. The meter is precoded for the FreeStyle Lite strips. FreeStyle systems use coulometry technology where the glucose signal is cal...
